Artist Statement

I have had the immense pleasure of being an artist my entire life. I remember drawing a group of Indians fishing for salmon in a stream at age five. My first art show award was at age thirteen for a drawing of a young girl playing a lute. Since then I have been in many shows and have fortunately won many awards.

During my life I have painted in oils, then in water color and for the last 25 years I have painted in pastels almost exclusively. I enjoy the vibrancy of pastels and that they adapt well to painting outdoors (Plein Air). Most of my paintings are done on site. I enjoy being outdoors and the direct experience of what I am painting. I walk a site taking it in. I wait for a feeling of excitement about something there. It could be a view, a color, a subject, or a shape. From there the process is to impart this excitement to my painting. It is a challenge and a joy. My favorite subjects are moving water and aged trees, and I enjoy painting in Maine and out West. My art goal is to express the beauty of what I see. I hope to have a viewer react emotionally to my paintings – to catch a glimpse of what I saw and felt.

I have had a number of mentors that have helped me improve my skills and deepen my insights towards my art. Mentoring began with my uncle Lester Gallagher at a young age. Lester loved painting the Indiana sand dunes of Lake Michigan. Since then I have studied with a number of master artists. For the last 12 years I have studied with Albert Handell of Santa Fe. Albert’s pastel work and oils are amazing. I have learned much from him. He has a special gift of weaving loose impressionistic work into a painting with wonderful detail and color. I am a member of a number of art associations and show my work at various art shows and galleries. I also teach workshops in Plein Air painting. It is my great joy to share my paintings with you.
